Only today
I’ve been in the process of updating my portfolio for almost 4 years. Now, to be fair, a lot of that process has been putting it off. But it’s still been one of those things that pops up first when I’m making a long term to-do list.
Today though, I thought about what it really means to have a portfolio.
It’s a measure of my skills, my experience, my creativity right? So I should have work spanning my growth, my progress as a designer and my best pieces since I’ve started in the field.
But…
What if I were only measured by what I’ve done recently. What if I’m only as good as my last project. What if I only put up work that accomplished something significant. What if you could only see one piece of work I’d done, and have to judge me based on that?
Isn’t that what happens in everyday interactions, at least on some level? Sure, people form opinions based on history, but memories are fleeting and so is creative energy.
What if Im only as good as what I’ve done today. How would that change the way I approach my work?
How would it change yours?
I have struggled with same things time and time again.
Would your portfolio include stuff from your 8-5 job?
What would you want to get out of having your portfolio up and visible? Potential new job? More friends?
I love this idea. It would be really motivating to post what you had created eveyday, as opposed to having a portfolio of past successes to fall back on. I do think you are only as good as your last project. There is always something to learn from past work, whether your own or others, but times change, needs change, technologies change, so you need to be able to make your mark today.
